It really doesn’t seem that hard, especially with all the technology we have at our fingertips, does it?

I went to go see Mom today. I walked to her room, and her name was no longer on the door. Her picture was gone. I swallowed hard. I walked back to the front.

”Louise, do you know where my mom is?”

”Oh sure, sweetie - she’s probably in her room.”

”Did she move rooms?” trying not to let my voice sound as angry as I was.

”Oh - yes, she’s in room 25 now.”

Cool. I guess no one thought to MENTION THAT TO HER FAMILY.

As I was walking back to her new room, one of the caregivers told me she was in the lounge. I went and sat with her for a while. I told her about my day, the property I had just toured, how work has been, about our trip coming up. She smiled, napped, murmured some things, napped again, smiled. I took her into the dining room for their afternoon snack and gave her a hug & a masked kiss.

As I was leaving, I stopped into her new room. I immediately noticed two things. The framed photo of my dad, and the framed drawing of a treehouse (that had a photo of my dad and me in the treehouse he built for me taped to the back of it) were gone. I wasn’t sure what else - it’s been over a year since I’ve been able to set foot in her room. (Either of them.) I took a framed photo of my grandmother as a little girl and my mom’s jewelry box (nothing but costume jewelry in, but I’ll be damned if I’m leaving it there).

”Louise, do you know where the framed photo of my dad and the one of the treehouse are?”

”No, but I’ll look for them. Are they small?”

”No. They were hanging on her wall.”

I left as my eyes welled up with hot tears. Louise (who is lovely & is simply the receptionist) called me a short time later. She found them in a closet. IN A CLOSET. Seriously, you move my mom without telling me and then shove my dad in a fucking closet!?

The director got an email from me today. Another one. About the value of that multi-syllable - but EASY to understand and implement word: COMMUNICATION. And a very clear message to Do Better, Cedar Ridge.
